Champaign’s Historic Preservation Programs

The City of Champaign’s historic preservation program includes designation as a Local Landmark or Local Historic District, and designation as an Honorary Local Landmark (for properties owned by taxing bodies i.e. Champaign Park District, Champaign Unit 4 School District).

The form for nomination of a Local Landmark can be found on the Historic Preservation Commission’s website:

http://www.ci.champaign.il.us/government/page.php?pn=government_bc_histpres

Nominations are reviewed by the Historic Preservation Commission and forwarded to the Plan Commission, which holds a public hearing.  The final decision to list a landmark or district is made by the City Council.  Champaign’s Historic Preservation Commission also reviews Certificates of Appropriateness for changes to the exterior of a landmarked building.  The Historic Preservation Commission meets the first Thursday of the month at 4:00pm in the City Council Chambers.  All meetings are open to the public and many are televised.
